Like the rest of the Rebirth Deluxe Editions, this volume begins with the Wonder Woman: Rebirth one shot that sets the stage for the beginning of the reboot of the main title. Rucka had signed on to steer the title for the first year of the Rebirth initiative, so this collection is only the first half of his run, leaving the second half to be collected in an as-of-yet-not-solicited Rebirth Deluxe Edition Book 2. Many of the Rebirth titles were implementing multiple artist teams in order to keep up with the the bi-weekly shipping schedule, but Wonder Woman differed in that Rucka was going to juggle two story arcs at once, alternating issues between 'The Lies', a story set in present day (Sharp), and a 'Year One' story set in the past (Scott). Greg Rucka was making a return to the character (he had already written one one highly acclaimed Wonder Woman run in the early 2000's), and artistic duties were going to be split between Liam Sharp (whose work I had not previously been familiar with) and Nicola Scott (who like Rucka, would be dancing with Diana a second time). When DC originally announced their Rebirth initiative, the title that I was looking forward to the most was Wonder Woman. I’m the exact opposite, so you can probably tell why I did not like her, but could at least empathize with her. From her early childhood, she is a spoiled princess, a dreamer who is not interested in academics at all. Most readers will probably like the character of Marie, but I did not simply because our personalities are far too different. Which was, of course, Carolyn Meyer’s goal when she wrote this book. The Bad Queen hasn’t made me like Marie Antoinette any more, but it has helped me understand her. They want to make the queen pay for her reckless extravagance-with her life. Meanwhile, the peasants of France are suffering from increasing poverty and becoming outraged. Desperate for affection and subjected to constant scrutiny, this spirited young woman can’t help but want to let loose with elaborate parties, scandalous fashions and unimaginable luxuries. She tried to please everyone-courtiers, her young husband, the king, the French people-but often fell short of their expectations. Perhaps no other royal has been so maligned-or so misunderstood-as Marie-Antoinette.įrom the moment she was betrothed to the dauphin of France at age fourteen, perfection was demanded of Marie-Antoinette. History paints her as a shallow party girl, a spoiled fashionista, a callous ruler. (Cover picture courtesy of Carolyn Meyer’s website.) The third book from the left on my keeper shelf is When Beauty Tamed the Beast by Eloisa James. Then I read it again to savor the fabulous writing and characters, especially the warm, colorful family of actors the wandering duke is embraced by.Įrin Quinn, author of The Five Deaths of Roxanne Love I got paper cuts from turning the pages at light speed to find out how it happens, and wept when it did. Putney was going to give the lovers a happy ending. Why is it on my keeper shelf? Well, c'mon, it's by Mary Jo Putney, the goddess of historical romance! This is one of my favorites of hers because the ducal hero is dying - yes, dying! - in the book, and I couldn't figure out how Ms. My third-book-from-the-left keeper is One Perfect Rose by Mary Jo Putney. Many of her books are series, with a set of characters one grows fond of and an overarching theme that unites all the stories. There's something endearing about the characters in her subtle romances, her historical research is impeccable, and she knows how to evoke the Regency era. No surprise that it's on my keeper shelf because I am a fan of Regency romances, and Chesney is a popular English writer of the traditional regency. Gundabald forces her into apparent compliance by threatening to reveal her secret to the Church, which would burn her at the stake. In other words it is indeed an outline, an outline for a work that it still shadowy in the writer’s mind. Reading Outline is like spying on an author in the process of auditioning characters for a future novel. Outline is a novel about writing and talking, about self-effacement and self-expression, about the desire to create and the human art of self-portraiture in which that desire finds its universal form. The more they talk the more elliptical their listener becomes, as she shapes and directs their accounts until certain themes begin to emerge: the experience of loss, the nature of family life, the difficulty of intimacy and the mystery of creativity itself.
